Candidacy for LASIK Eye Surgery
Lasik
LASIK is a surgical procedure done on the eyes that is designed to reduce dependency on corrective contact lenses or eyeglasses, oftentimes eliminating the need for them altogether. A relatively recent technology, LASIK has quickly become extremely popular due to its ability to bring a new level of convenience to people with mild to moderate farsightedness or shortsightedness. However, it is still important to keep in mind that LASIK, even with its short recovery time, is a surgical procedure and should be approached as an option very carefully.

Candidacy for LASIK Eye Surgery
The most important thing for anyone considering LASIK surgery is to determine if they are a good candidate. Finding a surgeon who will honestly assess compatibility is extremely important, and vastly preferable to a provider who does not do a careful examination, and thus risks serious side effects. Some of the factors that can make people unable to safely undergo LASIK surgery are the presence of a disease that could slow healing, more serious eye problems than classic nearsightedness or farsightedness, being on medications that might interfere with post-operative healing, a prescription for eyeglasses or contacts that is continually changing, or the presence of various eye abnormalities that could complicate the LASIK procedure. Patients should also have the ability to stop wearing contact lenses for an extended period of time before the surgery, have someone who can drive them home after the exam and procedure, and be able to afford to take ample time to recuperate and allow the eyes to heal.
